Where do Macau wind players practise?

Home, a music-shop practice room, a school or orchestra rehearsal room — all three work, and all three ask you to fit around them. This piece sets out what you are fitting around, and whether there is a fourth option.

SOLO Self-Service Piano Rooms · about 3 min · August 2026

Wind players spend a lot of time fitting around things.

Around the hour, around the place, around the neighbours. Macau is small and its housing is dense — upstairs and downstairs are neighbours too. Somewhere to play is not hard to find; what you find is usually "yes, but you will have to work around it".

Work around things long enough and you stop noticing that you are doing it.

In the end it comes down to these three

At homeFitting around the hour
Nothing after ten at night, and some afternoons are borderline. You check the time before you start, and after a while that hesitation before opening the case becomes a habit.
A music-shop roomFitting around the instrument
The size of the room, the soundproofing and the layout are all built around a piano. You have to ask whether you can bring your own instrument, and closing time is closing time.
School or orchestra roomFitting around the schedule
You go by the rota, and which slot is yours is not up to you. Once you graduate or leave the ensemble, the option goes with it.

24 hours. If you want to play at three in the morning, come up and play.

Time you do not have to work around is the only time that is really yours.

No complaints, and the instrument can stay

Three things a wind player actually needs

Room to set up a stand

Rooms come in large, medium and small, so you can pick the space you need. A music stand and metronome are provided, and the air conditioning is yours to set.

No complaints, and no clock-watching

These rooms were built to a soundproofing design standard of over 60 dB — with someone playing on the other side, all you hear is a very faint sound. Open 24 hours, so playing at three in the morning disturbs nobody.

The instrument can stay in the room

A long-term room is yours alone. The case, the stand, cleaning kit and spare reeds can all stay, so you come with nothing but yourself.

* The room provides the piano; anything other than the piano comes with you. Strings, wind, voice and Chinese instruments all work here.
